The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
