Powerful Gales Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to avoid going out as powerful gusts lash the nation.

Intense winds attaining speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 households without power and compelled officials to halt over 100 flights, as reported by local media.

The gales are influencing the whole South Island and lower areas of the North Island, per the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have released uncommon high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in core zones encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been encouraged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for more electricity and network failures.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences predominantly in the southern region, although officials report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Local media have stated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel in and out of the city have been halted due to the weather, and various routes and public facilities are also closed.

At the same time Canterbury officials have declared a crisis declaration, to assist recovery activities.

Labor Protests Alongside Harsh Weather

The wild winds on today occur while many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.

However the extreme weather has forced them to change various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or abandoned.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the neighboring country, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Authorities have declared flame prohibitions for concern about forest fires.
