EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
